Brushstroke Detail
40 layers of oil glazing, built over 18 months

Margaret Chen
71Oil Painter · Santa Fe, NM · Painting since 1976
Golden Afternoon
Margaret began painting the high desert light outside Santa Fe in 1976, the year her youngest child started school. For nearly five decades, she has worked in a converted garage studio, building oil glazes the way a geologist reads strata — layer after patient layer.
"Golden Afternoon" was painted across eighteen months, the canvas never leaving the easel until she felt the light was right. It has never been shown publicly until now.
